Sales Speaker Says: If It’s That Ugly, Triple My Mileage, or Else!
By Dr. Gary S. Goodman

I was just reading a review of the new Hyundai Accent.

It costs just over $12,000 and it gets about 26 miles in the city, and 30-odd on the highway.

But it’s bugly, to be sure.

Bugly?

(Think: VW Bug--that’s partly where the word came from. You can conjure up its other derivation on your own.)

Anyway, consider the fact that my SUV gets about 15 or 16 miles per gallon, but it is roomy, safe, sporty, and prestigious.

What would it take for me to even think of driving the Hyundai or something in its general class?

Answer: Triple my mileage, or else!

Yes, I want to get 35 miles in the city, and about 45-50 on the highway, if I’m going to make a switch this dramatic.

How else am

I going to justify losing enough storage space for a case of water bottles, a huge athletic bag, several jackets, odd and assorted sports equipment, and other items, most of which haven’t seen daylight in six months or more?

I can put my skis, boots, poles, and luggage in the back of the vehicle and still comfortably transport four or five adults. My surfboard easily ties down on my aluminum roof rack and rails, along with lawn furniture, and the spare teenager.

Salespeople and marketers need to appreciate that people are willing to make tradeoffs, but the incentives need to be high. We rationalize our purchases, and if the rationale isn’t strong enough, we’ll stick with what we have, irrespective of what it is.

By the way, my SUV is quite appealing, so much so that I find I seldom have to drive all by myself. Attractive people want to accompany me in its leather seats and cushy roominess, so I’m not getting 15 or 16 miles per gallon, in energy terms, I’m getting double that.

So, I’m actually getting a Hyundai, without paying the “high” Hyundai price.

See, I know how to save, after all!
